Back To Reality

Here are 4 rough sketches for a western book cover I'm doing for Penguin. I've posted them in the wrong order of course but that does mean that my favorite sketch is at the top. I'm hoping that they choose no4, what I hope they don't do is ask for a combination of a couple of sketches and ask to see another sketch. Which would you choose?

I guess I would have to know a little more of the character of the novel. The top one suggests a more mature, "let me see" type of man. Ready to listen but also to take action. The angle you've chosen is also more dynamic

the second is a strictly action oriented guy and a common image though I give you "snaps" for a great composition. The third with his portarms is dramatic with the lighting but is he guarding his turf? The last he's either done killing a small animal for dinner or about to but doesn't emote much more emotion that that.

Uh.... did you just want me to say a number and not the reason? sorry.

I'm in agreement Steve. I like #4,.. #2 is my next choice. both have offset compositions which I like, but my guess is the AD will choose #1. The gun over the shoulder is less phallic than the other two poses, and the hat off, while less dramatic, eliminates unflatering shadows on our hero's face, lets us better see his eyes and character, and justifies the expense of hiring a model. Let us know.

Actually my favorite is the first one posted and then the last is second..

I like 'em all...but somehow I can really see type integrated into #3 for the title and author's name. It can also work into the others nicely, but somehow, #3 struck me for that reason.

I like no. 2 (3rd one down) for a reason I don't even know, maybe it's the fence in the backround.

Dude, I'd want to see a combination of all four, and the cow-dude should be a black pregnant lesbian. With a bigger hat. Surely you weren't expecting to get anything vaguely sensible out of me....

And the lucky winner is....No4.
It doesn't happen often that my choice prevails (just ask my wife) but now all I have to do is paint it up. I'll be posting the finished job of course. Thanks for playing along everybody I appreciated your insights.

I like no.4, it's all there but shows a side to the man that is slightly more passive...a human side rather than simply a trigger.
I guess like Sheila says, you'd have to know more about the character but 4 would be my choice, I like the composition of it.

Wow...so cool seeing these. I'm with you on number 4. Love the negative space that develops from his wide stance.
