It Was 20 Years Ago Today

That Sargent Pepper taught the band to play... and I painted this book cover. I don't know about the sargent but I had a lot of fun back then painting this kind of stuff.

Waiting

I was in a waiting room this morning because I've noticed recently that my waiting skills have been a little off. This is a drawing of Ernesto who has no such problems, he can wait with the best of them. I can wait until I can compete against the likes of Ernesto which is part of my problem.

X Files

A couple of things here, firstly I can't quite get my head around the evening blogging so I'm going back to mornings. I keep forgetting that I haven't blogged yet so I'm in danger of skipping by default. Secondly this is a really old book jacket I did for Random House about 16 years ago and although they excepted the artwork and paid me they decided to go in another direction and this became the very first book cover job I lost to photoshop, soon to be joined by many others of course. I got quite excited about it at first because I had already become an avid viewer of the TV program(such is life).
I gave the original painting to my good friends Hans and J9 despite the fact that the original would be worth $100,000,000,000,000.49 on eBay. Hans, you owe me a pint.

White Horse Tavern

This guy came in and just looked like he's had enough. Some kind of latter day Willie Lowman perhaps. In any case If ever I'd seen a chap enjoy a pint it was this one.

Ear Bar

This is such a good bar, full of charm and eclectic ornamentation, this place deserves a book of it's own and indeed it has one. It looks and feels like it should be on Montauk, I'll be heading back there just as soon a I can come up with a good fishing tale with which to regale the regulars. I should probably read Moby Dick.

5 Minute Ink Study

This was done at an Alumni drawing class at FIT. We had two such sessions last week. The first one yielded nothing blogable for myself but my friend Bri,on the other hand, was going great guns with some part of a tree dipped in ink, SEE FOR YOURSELF. I was so impressed I broke out the inks myself, but hats off to Bri.

Ken's Broome St Bar

Here is another bar I've been coming to for 20 years, not consistently but when I'm in Soho it's the other place for a pint if Fanelli's is too busy. 363 W. Broadway (corner of Broome St.) It refers to it's self as the "Original Soho Artists bar", I don't know about that but I do like the fact that the little kitchen is up front and if you sit at the end of the bar you can watch your burger being cooked. Don't take much to make me happy.

Pete's Tavern

This hat wearing dude was trying to pick up these women at the bar.I might have thought they were all together but when one of the women declared loudly "will you just leave us alone, we're trying to talk!", he and I both got the picture.

Pete's Tavern

Here is a lady lost in here thoughts, the atmosphere at Pete's is conducive to such moments.

Keep On Rocking Me Baby

My word those Jonas Brothers really know how to lay down those ass kicking vibes. Just when I thought I had nothing left to live for.

White Horse Tavern

here are a couple enjoying a lunchtime pint at the White Horse Tavern. You've got to admit, they have the right idea. I feel like I'm limping along with this book project at the moment but I will get there.

None On The One

Nice one Hans, Actually the none in this case refers to Angie who is never a none in my book. Angie didn't think this looked much like her but I think it's better than the last one I did. Sketch of the day. Chad, I'm going to have to to work on "four on the six", that's a lot of drawing.

One On The Two

There is no doubt about it I'm on a cosmic roll, where do I get this stuff I hear you ask. You either got it or you don't. "one on the two" ....inspired.

Two On The Three

One of the ways I'm changing the blog is to post in the evenings as opposed to in the mornings, this will give me more time to think of truly excellent titles like "Two On The Three". I'm feeling better already.

Chumley's

Chumley's used to be behind this door until it collapsed, now the door is all that's left. This was another great New York bar that is now gone, I was lucky enough to spend a great deal of time in there and did a bunch of sketches and took a load of photographs so I'm going to try to recreate it in a series of upcoming drawings. Gone but by no means forgotten.

2nd Anniversary

Hello good people of the World, yes I've made it to my second year of Daily blogging that amounts to 781 posts including this one and 5 days missed in total, not bad for 7 days a week including vacations and national holidays and such. So what now, I'm going to keep going although as i have remarked recently I need to find a way to keep things fresh and try not to sacrifice quality for quantity, I'm not sure how this will be accomplished but I'm always looking for a new twist to make it interesting for myself as well as those of you who are generous enough to keep coming back.

I have enjoyed the support over these last couple of years and enjoyed making new friends through this artist journey, thanks one and all.

This is a drawing of Brooklyn, the second in my water tower series although those ubiquitous golden arches kind of stole focus.

Thanks again.
Stephen

Dude Reading The Post

I knew this one was going to be trouble from the start, i had an odd angle on his head and he was bobbing around so much I couldn't really catch more than glimpses. What ya gonna do?

Alice

This is one of the finished drawings for the client whose sketch I posted a couple of days back. They wanted ink as opposed to pencil but the pencil sketch was how I was able to work up the portrait from a poor piece of reference, you have to draw your way through a problem sometimes.

Truck

Great title. One of the things I like about sketching is I always have something to do.
Walking around on Sunday with Angie, she suddenly decides to get a pedicure leaving me a chance to sit a get a sketch in. Your never alone with a sketch book.

Study

This is a quick sketch for a magazine commission. I have a suspect piece of reference I'm I'm trying to make a attractive drawing from it, this is the best of a few different attempts but I'll be doing more for sure.

Quantum Leap

This was one of the sketches for the book cover posted below that artwork for which is up for bidding on EBAY.
