Brooklyn Bridge

As promised, this is Roebling's Brooklyn bridge, they just don't build them like this anymore. I've drawn this bridge a few times now but you can never really do it justice.

The Roebling Bridge

This bridge was built by John A. Roebling and spans the Delaware river in upstate New York. Roebling also built the Brooklyn bridge and I'll have another drawing of that for you tomorrow. That Roebling dude was up to all sorts of nonsense as you will see by clicking HERE.

These guys were well into the Friday spirit.

Studebaker Building

I've been eyeing this one for a sketch for sometime and yesterday proved to be the day. It used to be a showroom for Studebaker cars but now it seems to be apartments. It sticks out like a saw thumb in Crown Heights. I'm sketching Brooklyn a lot at the moment so I can get back to posting on Urban Sketchers.

Sky Watch

That's what this piece called of hardware is called. I was walking Angie to the subway one morning and there it was, I had to do a drawing of it but by time I returned the cab was on the ground. I spoke to the police officer, Diana and she put it back up in the sky for me. Thanks Diana, this one's for you.

Bob Powers New Book

My friend Bob has his new book out today and is doing a reading at 7.30 tonight at the Barnes& Noble in Greenwhich village at 6th nave and 8th st. I did the illustrations for this book, 18 in all, and had a good time doing them. I'm going to the reading tonight so maybe I'll see you there. For details of Bobs book and the reading click HERE.

Guilty

I recently went to court to defend myself against a driving violation ticket. I was given a ticket for driving whilst talking on a cell phone, my point being I would have needed a cell phone with me in order for that to be a possibility so I went to court to make this point. I won. Not so this cab driver who was found guilty of driving the wrong way down a one way street. I couldn't hear his argument but the judge didn't buy it.

July 4th

Here am I continuing the military theme and getting into the 4th of July spirit at the same time. You are all forgiven in advance for not checking in with this blog today for who could think of such things with the promise of a hot dog looming so large.

And Again

Now it's getting silly, but what else could I do when I came across this one. The same two guys laying down the smack whilst on what looks like a ski holiday. This image is about as insipid as it gets, what was I thinking?

Another 20 Year Old

If it was a single malt scotch it might have aged a little better. These are the same two models I used for the painting I posted a couple of days ago (scroll down, I dare you). I probably have a few more book covers with these guys, I'll try to remember there names. Great times shooting reference at the Bob Osonitch Studio on 4th ave in Manhattan. Good old Bob, if you were the last shoot of the day you usually got offered a beer, that's my kind of guy.

Train Delay

I got stuck on the subway yesterday after an unfortunate incident at Franklin Ave in Brooklyn, I don't know exactly what happened but I did have a little more time than usual on this sketch. It's an ill wind, as they say.

It Was 20 Years Ago Today

That Sargent Pepper taught the band to play... and I painted this book cover. I don't know about the sargent but I had a lot of fun back then painting this kind of stuff.

Waiting

I was in a waiting room this morning because I've noticed recently that my waiting skills have been a little off. This is a drawing of Ernesto who has no such problems, he can wait with the best of them. I can wait until I can compete against the likes of Ernesto which is part of my problem.

X Files

A couple of things here, firstly I can't quite get my head around the evening blogging so I'm going back to mornings. I keep forgetting that I haven't blogged yet so I'm in danger of skipping by default. Secondly this is a really old book jacket I did for Random House about 16 years ago and although they excepted the artwork and paid me they decided to go in another direction and this became the very first book cover job I lost to photoshop, soon to be joined by many others of course. I got quite excited about it at first because I had already become an avid viewer of the TV program(such is life).
I gave the original painting to my good friends Hans and J9 despite the fact that the original would be worth $100,000,000,000,000.49 on eBay. Hans, you owe me a pint.

White Horse Tavern

This guy came in and just looked like he's had enough. Some kind of latter day Willie Lowman perhaps. In any case If ever I'd seen a chap enjoy a pint it was this one.

Ear Bar

This is such a good bar, full of charm and eclectic ornamentation, this place deserves a book of it's own and indeed it has one. It looks and feels like it should be on Montauk, I'll be heading back there just as soon a I can come up with a good fishing tale with which to regale the regulars. I should probably read Moby Dick.

5 Minute Ink Study

This was done at an Alumni drawing class at FIT. We had two such sessions last week. The first one yielded nothing blogable for myself but my friend Bri,on the other hand, was going great guns with some part of a tree dipped in ink, SEE FOR YOURSELF. I was so impressed I broke out the inks myself, but hats off to Bri.

Ken's Broome St Bar

Here is another bar I've been coming to for 20 years, not consistently but when I'm in Soho it's the other place for a pint if Fanelli's is too busy. 363 W. Broadway (corner of Broome St.) It refers to it's self as the "Original Soho Artists bar", I don't know about that but I do like the fact that the little kitchen is up front and if you sit at the end of the bar you can watch your burger being cooked. Don't take much to make me happy.

Pete's Tavern

This hat wearing dude was trying to pick up these women at the bar.I might have thought they were all together but when one of the women declared loudly "will you just leave us alone, we're trying to talk!", he and I both got the picture.

White Horse Tavern

here are a couple enjoying a lunchtime pint at the White Horse Tavern. You've got to admit, they have the right idea. I feel like I'm limping along with this book project at the moment but I will get there.
