A Day Later

I'm getting closer but there is a way to go yet, for me the main concern is putting in the street lamp and transitioning into the sky.

Cheese Shop

Here is another painting I'm working on, this is one session I'm trying to spend no more than two days on each but that is something I'll have to work for, right now I'm still learning the ropes.

Angie

A quick drawing of Angie on the subway.

Portait With Hand

I cropped out the other hand in this one not because I didn't like it but because I didn't have the time to scan and join this morning. Off to work I go.

Eddy

I'm back from Rhinebeck and the Duchess County Fair. It seems the recession is strong as by all accounts business was well down from years gone by. Eddy and I were selling caricatures and it was indeed a bear market. I would have stayed longer had there been enough action but not so my friends. What now? Back to the drawing board.

What, No Sketch?

I'm off for a couple of days but I have faith in your ability to carry on without me. Check back late on Thursday.....or not.

Finished

This is as far as I'm taking this one.

City Scape

Here is the city scape I'm working on and I'm having quite a struggle with it. Click HERE to see my first pass at it. Progress not perfection.

Portrait

Maybe I should break these up a little but they are a series after all. I'm still oil painting and will post some developments from that series soon. I'll be doing some caricature work at the Duchess County Fair in Rhinebeck next week so if you are in that area come by and sit for me.

One from yesterday's session. It was another good afternoon of drawing with model Jeramia and artist Peter Cusack.

Car

Always with the snappy titles. I saw this one yesterday for five minutes.

Portrait

From the same session as Friday's post.

Frenchtown

I didn't post yesterday because we were away in Frenchtown, New Jersey visiting friends. We were staying in this house. We had a great time but don't get me started in the Holland tunnel.

Jeramia

I don't know if that is the correct spelling but then names can be spelt is so many ways these day. I had a drawing session with Jeramia at Peter Cusack's studio yesterday and this in one of the drawings from that session. More to follow, as always.

Roof Top

Here is the other painting I'm working on. I think this is going to need two more sessions, the trick is going to be knowing when to stop. It's a view from my roof top in Crown Heights.

Crown Heights

Here is day one on another oil painting, this is Crown Heights, Brooklyn. This is the start of a series, fingers crossed.

Lady

I'm running out the door so I'm keeping things curt. She is a Lady and I'm late.

Finished

I started this painting as homework and posted it in an unfinished state which you can see HERE This is about as far as I'm going to take this one but I'm started work on the next one today. This is going to be a long process of my learning how to manipulate oil paint but I'm looking forward to the journey.

Sunglasses

This sketch was done on the same journey as yesterday's sketch, in fact I finished 3 drawings in one 20 minute train ride which is a record for me and represents a change in my thinking about what makes a drawing, it wasn't conscious, merely part of what I hope will be an ongoing evolution. The oil painting class was a clear indication to me that the practice of continued drawing is starting to pay off. Happy Saturday, I'm breaking out the oil paints again today.

Odd

This is rather more of a caricature that I'm used to doing but I'm telling you, good people of the World, I was closer than you might think.

Nancy Whiskey Pub

This bar has a balcony section at the back which is a great place to draw an people watch, there is also a shuffleboard table and dart board, what else do you want?

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

Nancy Whiskey Pub

This one has to be in the book. It's on Lispenard St at West Broadway and it's a classic dive. I only recently came across it but is really sums up old New York. If you are popping into Pearl Paint for some supplies, stop off for a quickie. Come back tomorrow and I might take you inside.

Water Towers

This is a view from one of the windows in the Soho Grand Hotel, plenty of water towers here.

Oil Study

This is the study that followed the other study which was preceded by the first study, so now you know.

Oil Study

This is the 2nd thing we were asked to do in class, this was just about color not drawing. It was a struggle to think of painting in those terms but it was all leading somewhere.
