Russian Couple

One of those May December relationships, they were on their way to Brighten Beach because if your a Russian couple thats what you do. He would, ever now again squeeze her hand and smile at her and she would, well it wasn't quite a smile but her face would contort in a manner almost pleasing to the eye.

Beer Nymphs

This is a companoin piece to Beer Nymph which I posted November 19th of last year, if you hit the lable "bars" and scrole down you will see it. Anyway these drawings, and there is a 3rd one that I can't find for the moment, are about celebrating beer for beer needs celebrating. Grab yourself a pint this very evening and take a moment before your first sip to behold this gift of the gods. Then that first taste, like an Angel crying on your tounge. Yes my friends, treat yourself tonight and tell me if that was not the best part of your day.

Monday

back to work, back to the subway, I try never to use the subway at weekends as a special treat for making it through the week, but then again withouy it us Brooklynites and New Yorkers in general would be doomed. Cheery thoughts for a Monday Morning. I recognise both the people in this drawing from multiple commutes but I will never know anything else about them other than we head in the same direction at the same time. What's up with me this morning, by my standards this is a short story.

This is how I woke up feeling this morning, it also makes a change from subway drawings.

Oh Yes She Is

Nude that is. Not just bars and nudes anymore though, I'm now bars, nudes and subway dudes. I miss drawing out doors so I'm eagerly awaiting spring.

Pete's Tavern

Two for the price of one. The top drawing is a reworking of a sketch I'd made a couple of years ago, the second drawing. Pete's is yet another of New york's historic bars.

Readers

The guy in the foreground finished the book he was reading, sighed and stared at it with a look of disapointment. Obviously not a great read.

Bill's Gay Nineties

My friend Rich is getting married today, he's the one who introduced me to the truly great bar on 54st and Madison ave. We were in there for lunch on Wednesday. It's a hard place to leave.
Congratulations Rachel and Ritchie.

Long Week

this lady sums it up. as she takes the 4 train back home to Brooklyn. I hope she woke up and got off at her stop, she was so out of it she might be there yet be on the train.

Old Town Bar

this was drawn during a Friday lunchtime session, it's only weekday lunchtimes when you get to see these bars at there best. That is when you have natural light and just a smattering of people so you can really see the space. It's not just because I like a liquid lunch, honestly.

200 Park Slope

is a great bar in Brooklyn with about 25 beers on tap, and a good happy hour through the week. It's a bit of a sports bar so Angie does not like it very much. I go there if I'm on the Slope by myself. Most bars on the Slope don,t open untill 4pm during the week and this is the case with 200 except Fridays when it opens at 11.30am, so now you know.

White Horse Tavern

567 Hudson Street at 11th Street in the west Village. I've drawn it from the inside so here it is from the outside. It was pretty cold which soon drove me back inside.

Subway Talk

these two were dicussing the one on the lefts thankless daughter,"..and to top it all off, she comes home with her nose pierced." I had to get off the train as they began to talk about her boyfriend, I suspect he might have had a tatoo.

World Cup final 2006

To keep yesterdays theme going, here's my world Cup Final experience. We were in the Hop Devil in the East Village surrounded by French and Italians. That's Angie in the bottom left. I've been in New York for every World Cup since 1990 and it's always some version of the above. There might have been a couple of Americans in the bar but that's about it.

Maybe Under Capello

Okay, so here's the story. These two drawings were made from sketches I'd done at a bar called Floyd's in Brooklyn during England's World Cup quarter final against Portugal in 2006. The top image depicts the moment when Owen Hargreaves (Canadian) converts England's only penalty during the shoot out. The 2nd drawing (first posted in Nov 07 after the Croatia game..I don't want to talk about it) depicts the moment shortly there after and pretty much ever since.
Why am I posting these today, it's Ben's birthday and he owns the original drawings, so if you see him out later, buy him a pint.

Book Worm

Angie is on a roll with the reading at the moment, when she's not reading she's painting and has just finished a portrait of one of our cats, Molly. Scroll down to see said painting, she also has a drawing up at the Society of Illustrators which you can see by clicking on the lable "Angie' and scolling down to "Angie's life Drawing".

Angie's Painting of Molly

Angie usualy paint's vegatables, Molly is as smart as a carrot which you can probably tell by looking at the painting.

The 5 Train

I get on at President St and head to Manhattan, when I mangage to get a seat I have the chance to draw. This one went well. The girl on the right asked for a quick peak as she was getting of the train. In hindsight she probably meant the sketch.

First Till of the Year

regular visitors to this site may know this is one of my favourite subjects. This is one of the tills at the Old Town Bar, I used my ruling pen again just to see where I was at. This is a great still life subject in a great bar with a great pint by my side.
I'm sure I'll be doing yet another drawing of this till very soon, next time in graphite. I guess this is one of my standards.

Bundled Up

These two lads on the subway made me smile, they were prepared for the cold outside but the subway trains get so hot and they just looked miserable, not that I enjoy the misery of others but we can all relate to this one.

Knitted Hat

I think this style of knitted hat looks really silly, even more so when it's worn indoors, nobodies head gets that cold. It screams "look at me, I'm so interesting!" I'm going to try to make a collection of indoor wooley hat drawings. tis the season.

McSorley's

here is a rather welcoming look at a New York classic. The atmosphere at McSorley's is always great but the place has greater appeal on these cold winter evenings. This place has never closed it's doors since1854, now that's what I call dedication.

Nude Years Day

My first post of 2008 and I'm starting the year with a bad pun. I'm sure you'll forgive me as hungover as you are.
