Here are a couple of quick color sketches that I did in preparation for a finished color sketch I hope to get to today. Not a whole lot of difference here i know but one is my choice and the other is Angie's and she know way more about color than me. 'A' or 'B' people, what are your thoughts.

My initial preference was for B but I think A has a bit more depth to it. I like the darkness of B but then again I just had a publisher ask me to lighten up a couple of my own images. I'm starting to think my monitor's on the way out...or it could be my eyesight.
No help from me, I'm so on the fence its hurting my bum. I hope Fraser agrees.
The yellow sky and purple shadows in A. are a little to cheery like a California landscape.
I like the ashcan school of B. for this. You could make the gray shadows look cool against a yellow sky or a gray sky look yellow against the cool shadows. it will suggest a more bleak future.
I was reminded recently how an adjacent color can effect our perception of any given color
when the great James Gurney blogged on the subject.

'B' conveys the gloom but is too dark/looks almost monochrome/lacks contrast (one of the above, can't pinpoint it). The tones in 'A' are better but too cheerful. if you can do 'A' but add the gloom of 'B'without losing the color or whatever, you would be right on.
"A" if I had to look at it for more than a few seconds. I like the blue tint on Mickey.

Always a good idea to look at Jim Gurney, I agree. Also feel that while B is gloomier, the color contrast in A brings more attention to the rat. I would like to see more of the rat too, so there's more space between the border and the ear.
I agree with Hans, he has a soft arse.
I too am on the fence: I understand the need for a grey sky, yet the blue sky throws the rat forward a little. So I say "A", blue sky, perhaps backlight the rats head to give an added depth, give it a little halo sort of thing, but subtley. At the end of the day, what do I know- Larry's comments are usually valid...
