Engine Wash

Who knew you had to wash an engine. I had a car when I was in England but then moved to New York and spent the next 17 years without one. I've forgotten all that's involved in car ownership, next stop, car therapy (It really does think it might be a toaster oven).

Reader

I love the readers as much as I love the sleepers, especially when the readers are into a good "Grisham" he's a real page turner. Happy Sunday people and come on Spain.

Drawing Class

Last night I attended a drawing class at FIT hosted by Melanie Reim who is a fantastic artist and teacher. We drew from 6pm to 12am, a great way to welcome the weekend.

Lady on the 5

This was drawn on a homeward bound train, sleeping is the NO1 activity on any train I've been on, texting is fast on the rise though.

Bristens Again

One of the things about keeping a daily sketch blog is that it reveals the patterns of your life. This is my 2nd drawing from Bristens back yard, you can see the first one here but there is, however a glaring omission in this latest drawing. A prize to the first person who spots it (that prize being my admiration). I'll put in the missing detail on my next breakfast drawing trip, we'll play spot the difference.
PS, I'm not talking about the back door because I left that out on purpose for composition reasons.

Emissions Certificate

I had to take our car for a new Emissions Certificate yesterday which is one of those things that always takes up more time than they should. "Come back in an hour" so what to do with that hour except park at the plaza across the street sit on the concrete and draw, so here is our car, it's a Daewoo. Apparently Daewoo make cars and toaster ovens and since we can't seem to get a decent slice of toast out of it, this must be a car.

The Ballet

I'm far from a culture vulture so I was surprised to find myself at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. The Ballet in question was Sleeping Beauty and by the end of the 3rd act the woman in the foreground was certainly the former.

Tea Lounge

So you made it through to another weekend. Congratulate yourself by grabbing a cup of coffee at your local hangout, in this case the Tea Lounge on Union St, Park Slope, Brooklyn. For some of you that's going to be to far to come but I'm sure you'll make do with whatever is on your doorstep. I'm clearly not yet thinking straight but then, like you, at least I made it this far.

Ladies Night

I really bit off more than I could chew with this one, it's one thing to draw a sleeping person on the subway but trying to capture these three ladies while they were all talking drinking and eating was tough and just when I was getting somewhere, they had somewhere else to be.

View From Bristens Garden.

Bottle Opener

This is my favourite bottle opener, it used to be a bicycle but then these days it's not unusual to have to reinvent yourself in order to survive. I don't know what kind of bicycle it was but when it comes to opening bottles it never disappoints.

Back To The 4

Haven't been commuting much of late because of my work load at home (which is great because of the European Championships being on ESPN) but I went in yesterday and was able to snag another sleeper. I really enjoy the subway drawing because the time just slips by.

It Happens

I'm dismantling my old sketchbooks for a show and selling purposes and also a possible book. Long story short, this is was my current favourite drawing (First posted April 30Th) an thus sitting atop a pile. Home renovations, radiator pipe burst, spray. This drawing was the only on damaged. My question being, is it lost? Should I try and save it or just move on? Did the water damage to it any favours? It's hard to let go sometimes. What to do? Your thoughts?

Father's Day.

Here is a touching father and son moment from Bob's book. I took a huge liberty with a famous illustration by an equally famous illustrator, any guesses? No prizes. Happy father's day to those for whom this is an appropriate greeting.

Waiting

This was a very quick sketch done as I, along with my friends Eddy and Jen were waiting for people to show up for a caricature. We were somewhere in Scranton at big sort of "Works Day Out" event, four hours of non stop drawing in the hot sun. Good times.

Dude With Hands

We've all got hands of course, but they are difficult to draw especially when your subject doesn't know he's being drawn a has an itchy nose. Please ignore the ink stained gutter from the Moleskine on this one, working in transit with wet media is not recommended.

The View from Bristens

Bristens is on Franklin between St Johns and Sterling in Crown Heights. It's an all day breakfast place with a great garden out back, they do a jazz brunch on Sundays. Yesterday I sat in the window and did this drawing, life is good.

One Year Anniversary Of Daily Blogging

That's 365 days with one day missed while we were on the Big Sur and couldn't get WiFi.
This will be the 419th entry. I was only intending to do this for one year but now I feel compelled to keep at it. I really want to thank all of you who have visited this site in the last year and I've enjoyed all your comments and encouragement. So on to the next year, I'm planning to revamp and make it easy for anyone who wishes to buy drawings to be able to do so, and thanks again to those who have bought my drawings in the past.
The drawing above is one I did yesterday on the subway, I had thought about doing a drawing of a cake with one candle to mark the occasion but then that's not what this is all about.

Thanks again
Stephen

How Do You Follow Jose?

With a nude, I'm sure Jose would agree since he gets followed by nudes on a daily basis.

Jose

Jose is the polisher at a place where I work. He's been wanting me to draw him for a while now, he's such a great character I'm sure to draw him again.

Bob Powers

I must have done this drawing about a year ago and I certainly didn't do Bob any justice here but that's how it goes sometimes. Anyway, check out Bobs new book and see the drawing below.
