Fragile Planet

That's the name of a show I'm doing a painting for, I've got a couple of ideas above which I would like to bounce of you. I'm my own art director on these which is always a problem for me. Which of these two conveys the theme better and or would make a stronger painting? I'd love to hear from you on this.

Winston

This was a first. I've been drawing on the subway for 5 years now and usually try to keep a low profile. Last night I was drawing and someone opposite me when Winston approached and asked if I would draw him. Absolutely! I stood up against the door and he sat and posed, it was great, I didn't have to worry that he'd notice me and move or get off at the next stop and look, he's not sleeping.

Another Dude

Another day another dude. This was on the way home from the city yesterday, I tried two others but they were both fidgets.

My 1001th Post

I'm going to count the next 1000 like this, tedious or what? This is some dude on the subway who liked like he had just been through something, he had a story to tell but I wasn't the one he was going to tell it to. Such is life my friends.

My 1000th Post

I remember how excited I was when I reached my 100th post. This is another view of Pete's Tavern and one step closer to my finishing this bar book project. This is the year to get it out or admit defeat which means it will be out this year for sure. Will I ever reach 2000 posts, stay tuned good people of the world.

Dudes

I have done countless of these portraits for a publishing company in England, I really enjoy doing them and I liked this one in particular. I looks like A nice day today so I'm going out drawing for tomorrow's post.

Faces From The Tea Lounge

I tried to draw outside today but it was way too cold.

Gowanus Canal

This is the Gowanus Canal at the point where the F train crosses it. At least I think that's what it is. I do so love industrial ugliness.

Moishe commented on yesterday's drawing saying you could see the drawing on the other side of the page showing through like a watermark. here is the other side of the page. These drawings seem like a long time ago now.

Snooky's

I'm getting back to this bar book again and going through old sketch books. This was one is from 2005 and the bar "Snooky's" no longer exists. I was only in there this once because I couldn't bring myself to drink in a place called "Snooky's". This drawing won't make the cut for the book but it does serve as a reminder of how I started the process.

Gracie Lindsay

It's possible this was the first book cover I ever did, it's also 1987 whilst I was still in England. I always thought I had a good memory when I was younger but then I had so much less to remember. Was 1987 a good year? All I can say for sure is that I lived to tell the tale.

Barrier Island

This might well have been my first ever book cover, the author was John D McDonald. I don't have a printed copy but there must be one kicking about somewhere. I'm saying this must have been about 1987, the artwork is very small and I used a picture of Clint Eastwood for reference for the face which could have spelled trouble. We live and learn.

This is Avly, he works at the Society of Illustrators and he alright by me.

A Shady Character

That's what I was thinking anyway, hence the extra shading.

Darwin Awards

Could this be it? I've been going back and forth with the art director at Penguin on this but I think we have arrived at this being the final sketch, he has a meeting this morning so all will be revealed. I like this one.

Worry

It was the look of impending doom that "drew" me to this woman. She was sat on the subway and I'm guessing, was on her way to work, clearly distressed about what was awaiting her. I don't even know if she was on her way to work, she might have just been regretting having had two cups of coffee and a bran muffin.

Darwin Awards

The art director asked for another sketch (this one) and he'll be showing them this morning, I'm routing for this one. Any thoughts?

The Bill

This old English TV program came up in conversation recently and I was reminded of this illustration I did for the TV Times back in 1987. I was amazed that I still had a copy after 23 years.

And Again

This was from yesterdays trip into Manhattan. Today seems like a much brighter affair although looks can be deceiving. Happy Sunday.

Darwin Awards

I've been doing these book covers for the Darwin Awards books by Wendy Northcutt and these are the sketches for the 6th book in the series called "Countdown To Extinction"
They are odd to do because they are very similar in layout and I don't think I'm there yet with these but it's now in the hands of the art director. Stay tuned.

Yes it's groundhog day here at the corporate headquarters of Sketch of the day. This is the last one of these I have so who knows what tomorrow might bring. It's till cold out and we had a little more snow last night. Stay tuned good people of the world.

I had to draw the woman on the right, she wasn't taking any chances, the chap on the left was just a bonus.

Yesterday's Dude

The dude I drew yesterday. I'm working in the city again today so hopefully I'll find another sleeping victim. I'm really anxious to get stuck in to this new year, so much to draw so, little time.

Another view out of the same window as Saturday's post, scroll down to see that one. It's great weather to draw from a window. With this one I was trying to be a little clever, there is a thin line between clever and stupid.

First Sketch Of The Year

The view from a window in downtown Brooklyn. It's way to cold to be out at the moment but I was lucky enough to be near this window. I'm hoping to gather some momentum early this year, fingers crossed.

Happy New Year 2010

This drawing made me happy. It's a drawing of me by the brilliant Victor Juhasz, he did it without me knowing whilst we were at the VA hospital and I discovered it on Steve Brodner's site. I feel ready for a whole new year of drawing, who about you?
