Running Man

I think it's going to be one of those days. Have I mentioned anything about our bathroom renovation? So many unforeseen issues and today I'm doing my taxes, I feel like doing a runner myself.

Deer Head Lodge

This is a sketch for a painting I'm doing as a private commission. The lodge in question no longer exists but it's owner wanted a painting of it during it's hay day. I'll be doing some kind of step by step on this one, I'm looking forward to getting stuck in. The lodge was in a place where we spend a great deal of time and I got to take some shots of it before it's demise. I'll be working from those shots and some old brochures that the owner, Martin has sent me. I got this commission because Martin landed is HELICOPTER in front of the house we were staying at and, of course had had to draw it, we got talking and the rest, as they say.....

Quickie

Dude

You might think this boarders on caricature but this guy really did have a long face. I could have drawn him all day but he had better things to do.....I didn't.

LA Dude

I found one more LA drawing, here is a typical LA dude sat by the pool with his lap top on his cell phone. He's probably trying to sell his screenplay for "Seasick Steve, The Movie". I'd buy a ticket.

Biker Dude

This is the last drawing I have in the LA series, could this be the owner of the bike I drew in yesterdays post? No it isn't but I thought I would have him for a while but then he woke up suddenly and was gone.

Bike

This is a drawing I did whilst on a break having a pint sat outside a microbrewery in Silver Lake. The view I had was almost all in shadow but I thought it was worth a go.

Hydrant

This was my first drawing in LA, Angie wanted to pop into a store for 5 minutes so I just took the chance to draw something quick to get off the mark. Happy Sunday. I think I now have a word verification for comments, there was just too much spam getting through.

Nasty

As happy as I was with yesterdays drawing I was really disappointed with this one. It was my last drawing of the day and I was so excited about the previous one I couldn't resist having another go, I got caught in two minds about this one, was tired, hot and had to rush because we were on our way back to the airport. It all made for this insipid looking sketch which I thought about not posting but then again, as I mentioned yesterday, in the attempts of full disclosure I thought you might find it interesting. We learn from our mistakes.

Venice Beach

This is probably my favorite drawing of the trip, tomorrow I'll post my least favorite in the attempt at full disclosure. Venice beach is like the east village only on the beach and with good weather. Crazy people doing crazy things.

Rose bowl

This is the food court at the Rose Bowl, there was no way to attempt this drawing without color being the main event. These watercolor pencils are great for this kind of drawing.

Silver Lake

We just got back from LA this morning so I'm posting this quick before I attempt to get the day started. I had a pretty good trip and I've got more drawings to post over the next few days. It's almost good to be back.

I really had a good time with this one, I had bought some watercolor crayons earlier that day and used them for the first on this drawing, LA is all about color.

Margarita

I got to some good drawing yesterday but since I'm having some scanner issues this morning I'm posting this margarita which I drew then drant at the bar on Friday night. I tasted better than it looks.

Santa Monica

This is where it all began. By that I mean drawing with a ruling pen in the style. March 2007 I did THIS drawing and three years later I'm back to see where I'm at. I'm going to have to think about this one.

International Women's Day

I just found this out so here is an international woman for you, Bette Davis. This is a small 5x7 inch painting in gouache(what else?) that I did for a class assignment some years ago. I'm off to LA tonight so expect some palm trees coming at you very soon.

A Man In His Element

Here I am at one of my favorite spots, McSorley's. A great place to draw and enjoy a quite beer. Angie caught me in the act with this picture. Do I look happy? I should.

Dude

There are dudes and then thee are mega dudes, this is just a dude.

Ikea

Yesterday we had to go back to Ikea for reasons to dull to mention, I bit the bullet and drove there but upon arrival Angie told me that if I wanted to stay outside and draw whilst she went in it was OK with her. Yes folks, I got it that good.

Nude

I was at FIT yesterday to do a quasi gouache demo in my friend Melanie's class. Whilst gouache is my medium of choice I've never used it this way before, painting directly on board from a live model. I had a good time in the class with a talented bunch of students and learned a few things which is always good. Thanks Melanie.

Sam Dude

Sam dude just gets on the subway, sits in front of me and falls asleep, well what does he think is going to happen. Sam dudes are just begging to be drawn.
