Getting Around

I have been working from home lately so me subway drawings have been few and far between. This blog has been a great experience for me and has pushed me to draw when I might have otherwise done nothing except stare into space. The Subway drawings have been done for practice and to have something to post, so I was delighted to be asked to show them in a gallery as part of Subway themed show. It's my first actual gallery show, too bad I'll be in LA and miss the opening, thems the breaks.

Creatures Of Habit

I've mentioned before that keeping a daily sketchbook tends to reveal the patterns of your life. Well here is proof positive for me and the man in the drawings. These were done on lunch breaks from work at my local bar called JD'S that has since been closed down by the health department, bad lunch choice by all accounts. Over the course of a couple of years I did the same drawing on at least three occasions, The guy sat in the same position with his arms folded in the same way on each of those occasions but I didn't notice until I was going though my old sketchbooks.

Rasholnikov Revisited

It went like this, I got and E-mail from my client's college telling asking if I could do another more finished rendering for this job, upon finishing said rendering I found an E-mail saying not to bother because their client had already chosen drawing no 2. Such is life.

Posting 500

Is it too soon to lay another till on you? Clearly I don't think so. Hit the label Till to see all the others. Crazy times at the moment, I'm working on another Rasholinkov drawing today. And this is my 500th posting, on the 1000th.

Rasholnikov

I said in an early blog how I would give more than 1 version of a drawing to an art director, Partly because I enjoy the process so much that once is not enough for me. Because they are all drawn from the same reference that are all very similar but I vary the degree of finish. We'll see what happens with these 3.

This is yet another magazine commission, this was my 9th attempt to draw this portrait, the trick is to keep the hand moving and also it takes a few versions to know what to leave in or edit out. I often send 3 finished versions in varying degrees of detail to give the art director a choice. That's just the kind of guy I am.

Oddment

I came across this comp in my plan chest recently and although I can say it was done in the last two years, I honestly can't remember what it was about, although I clearly had an agenda with it. If it comes to me I'll let you know but regardless of that It's sketch of the day.

Soft Girl

that's what I was trying to do with this drawing, keep it soft and build it with tone and not line. I'll keep trying.

This is about as sketchy as I get, I didn't set out to draw like this but I was having a hard time pulling it together. Sketchy to say the least.

Kitty

as I mentioned yesterday, we're cat sitting and this is the cat in question "Kitty", ironically she is the one who seems to do most of the sitting, or in this case lying.

Manhattan View

We are cat sitting for friends at the moment while our kitchen is being renovated. It's one of those dream apartments that has a large terrace with a Manhattan view, it feels like we're on holiday.

The Drys

Eric Drysdale to be precise. Last night I went to a stag night for Bob Powers for whom I'm doing some illustrations at the moment. I got there an hour early and was fortunate enough to bump into Eric so I snagged him for a drawing. Great way to start the evening.

For a Magazine in the UK. I'm finding it hard right now to get any drawing done of my own but I'll be back for sure. In the mean time I really like doing these portraits, trying to keep the lines simple and direct is always a challenge, I do so love a challenge.

Old Town Till

I have had a lot of E-mails lately from people asking to see another till drawing. Actually, I've had no such E-mails and quite likely never will but I went ahead and drew another Old Town Till anyway. I can't be stopped.

Western

This is the finished painting for the book cover. There was a time I could have given you a title or an author but such is the business these days I'm just lucky to have the job in the first place. Don't get me started.

Girl on Subway

For want of a better title, here she is. Traveling on the subway on a hot summer weekend is such a drag because it's a cauldron on the platform and an icebox in the carriages, a breeding ground for germs or so I'm told, not that I worry about such things being invulnerable. Such is life.

Ace of Clubs

I was recently invited to contribute artwork for a deck of playing cards, I was assigned the ace of clubs and this was my take on it. 52 artists were chosen from 4 different art colleges, I was in the group selected from FIT. I look forward to seeing all the cards that were created.

Sunday Nude

It's been a while since I posted a nude, there was a time when my sister commented on how all I drew were bars and nudes, yes life was really that good.

Western Book Cover Rough

this is a sketch for the painting I'm working on at the moment. I'm also working on the "Messy Desk" painting, the AD chose sketch A to my surprise but then life is full of surprises. I'll be posting the finished painting soon.

Where To Get Off

This guy had a really good look and was a great subject, I might have told you that he got off a little early as far as the sketch was concerned, but then again, who am I to tell him where to get off.
