I like the subtle "real" details that I always look for; the bra strap, the covert look of the girl next to red blouse; the worn book and the foamed empty glass. I have set this as my desktop background for a few days to study it. Its really good.
I have been looking at this painting for a few days on my desktop and trying to see what makes it work so well. I have been distracted by looking for something in the vibrant colors,(and they do play a big part) but what actually makes my eye go deep into the picture is your use of perspective. Good detail,ie, the 3 front people. Then interesting things to look at right in the front of the picture. Then my eyes walk down the counter to the spotlighted drama between the three women. Move across to the barman. The receding lights above and bar counter pull me back into the picture and moves me along to the group of three waiting for their turn at the pool table. After that my eyes roam about taking in the fantastic background. Colors,looking to see if anyone else is doing something interesting. Yup, it is a picture that talks back.

We don't have dive bars in northern Virginia, but we've got a load of wineries. Have you ever drawn the drinking scene and vineyards at a winery?
