Ring Design

I'm putting together another lecture for high school kids on the importance of drawing and this is an aspect of my career I rarely if ever talk about but it's an opportunity that came about for me through being able to draw. This is a pencil design of a ring for a client to see a his specific stone in an already existing jewelry design. If the client wants to go ahead with the ring i might be asked to do a color rendering, I'm always up for that. I must have done a thousand of these drawings.

Callicoon

This was a real quickie, I don't think I even had 10 minutes on this one and you can see by it's nature that it was rather rushed. Better than nothing though and sketch of the day. I've got some ideas for the weekend so stay tuned.

Lebron

I don't follow basketball but this image seems rather timely with the playoffs in progress. This was one of about 80 paintings I did for Upper Deck last year and a great year it was too.

Fanelli Cafe

I know I've been calling some of these drawings unfinished but this one does fit the bill. I sat a drew broad tones with very little detail, I like it at this stage but it does need some definition, I'll be posting it again later.

Ruby And I Draw Her Mother

This is a two day theme, we had a sort of mini art camp this weekend, Ruby is well into her drawing at the moment.

And all is right with the world. Ruby is 11 years old and the daughter of my friend EDGAR JERINS, you can see she has had a bit of a genetic leg up and yes I'm that handsome.

This is a drawing of our friend V who is staying with us this weekend up at highland lake. I dare say I could do her more justice if I had a second go but that's always the case but for the time being it is sketch of the day.

Inside Peter's

It's kind of dark and moody in here but it has the real old bar feeling that always makes me feel at home. It's definitely a locals bar. Good beer good burgers and chops, good times.

Peter McManus Cafe

You can't beat this one for close to the subway. I started going to this place about 20 years ago, I don't go out of my way for it anymore but if I'm in the vicinity I consider it a crime of opportunity. It's on 7th Ave and 19th st, I had some fine nights in here and watched the Yankees win a World Series to boot.

Almost Reading

I don't think she could have been reading since the book was slumped at such an odd angle and 20 minutes went past without so much as the turning of her head let alone the page.

John @ Old Town Bar

This isn't finished but I lost my way with it, I've spent enough time in here that I can put the finishing touches to it and maybe post it again.
John is the daytime bartender at Old Town and a fine one at that.

Two Quickies

Sometimes they just up and leave. I like the way this page turned out in spite of the fact that both subjects abandoned me after a couple of stops. It's Saturday and I woke up in a good mood, I'm sure it will pass.

Non Nude

This was a 20 minute pose from last night, I like drawing from this low angle, you don't get too many of these on the subway. I was going to work in to it a little more but then it's an honest 20 minutes so why not just put it up.

Gills

This is cousin Gills all the way from bonnie Scotland, we are going drawing at the Society tonight so tomorrow there should be some nudes to be had.

Red Neck In Repose

I couldn't call this one "Dude" now could I? I've missed a couple of days recently but I am back on schedule again. Hans and Melanie, thanks for noticing my absence. Normal service will now be resumed, if indeed "normal" is an apt description. I'm coming up on 2 years of posts and have missed 5 days in total so far, this is no time to get slack. Dude

I call most of these subway drawings "Dude" but this one really lives up the title. He had dude written all over him, not literally but he was so fast asleep that if I'd had a magic marker on me I could have made that happen.

Au Contraire

About 10 years ago I used to do a bit of stand up comedy, I never got very far it's such a tough job but I got to know a great bunch of guys many of whom went on to do well. Christian Finnegan was one of the guys I used to do shows with and his star is very much on the rise and deservedly so and when he asked me to do the cover for his second comedy CD and DVD Au Contraire I jumped at it. The show airs on Comedy Central tonight at 11pm, past my bedtime but since it's the weekend I might stay up. Actually I'm going to watch it with the man himself at a party in Manhattan. What a life.

Work In Progress

A while ago I posted this DRAWING and this ONE and said I would post a work in progress shot. Well here it is and tomorrow I'll post the finished illustration and tell you all about the project.

Rattle 'n' Hum

This is my new favorite bar, it's on east 33rd st between 5th and Madison. 40 beers on tap but this is where it gets interesting, 5 cask ales, real English beer available in the states. I never thought I'd see the day. Visit the bar's Web site by clicking HERE!

Double Header

It's rare that I get to draw two people in one session but with the train being delayed because of a sick passenger on a the train in front of us I was making out like a bandit. It's an ill wind, as they say.

Who's This Guy?

He's the guy who was on the subway on my return from the dog drawing session on the upper west side which was mostly rained out but I got to draw some great dogs and meet some fine folks before the weather beat us into submission.(That was a long sentence)

Dude

I was going to call it 'Dude with a cap sleeping on the 5 train on Wednesday evening" but I couldn't be bothered to type it. I'm off to the upper west side to draw dogs today.

Kinsale Tavern

Of all the bars in Manhattan I have the longest history with this one (20 years). It's located on 3rd Avenue between 93rd and 94th st and I used to live across the street which made this my first local pub. Coming from England where all the pubs close at 11pm I used to love that I could finish a book jacket painting at 3am and pop over the road for a pint.

A Train

The seating configuration on the A train allows me to get some profile drawings whilst th 4 and 5 trains don't. I think I'll try for the A train a little more often but then I wind up on the west side and that's no picnic, unless of course you brought a sandwich.
