Yesterday's Guy

I've been doing these bar sketches for years now and You run into the same people from time to time. These are two sketches I did of the chap from yesterdays post, they were done in a bar called JD's which no longer exists. I did a great many sketches of the regulars in JD's and they all and to find another watering hole when it closed. For this guy it was P.J Clarke's which is only two blocks from where JD's once stood.

P.J Clarke's

Here is a chap enjoying a drink and the news paper on a Monday Lunchtime. Ease into the week, that's what I say.

Angie And Gils

This was a quick sketch of Angie and Gil's on the way into the city last weekend to visit the high line. Not the best likeness of either but it was hard to manage that in the short time I had. Excuses excuses.

Stevan Dohanos Award Winner 2009

I found out this week that this painting won the Stevan Dohanos award for the Member Open Show from the Society of Illustrators.
I'm thrilled because I've never won anything before except for a coloring in competition when I was 9(I was good at staying within the lines). For those of you that are New York based the Member Open show will be up as of Dec 1st and there will be an opening reception on Wednesday Dec 2nd at 6pm.

As for yesterday, the art director chose 'A' You can't win them all.

Queen Mary 2

I was on my way home from Fairways yesterday when I noticed this massive ship moored in Red Hook. It was towering over the houses and I had to find a place to sit and sketch it. That's down town Manhattan to the left.

Gills

Gills came for another visit from Bonnie Scotland and I'm never going to drink again. I think that tells the story.

Franklin Park

This was my other drawing from Saturday. I really can't think of anything else to say about this one. Sketch of the day!

Lauren

Yesterday the weather was pretty miserable so I took myself off to Franklin Park for some indoor drawing. I was so quite in the bar that Lauren who was bar tending that evening agreed to sit for a portrait. It's an ill wind as they say. Thanks Lauren.

The Mary Whalen

This is the other drawing from Tuesdays session at this grand old tanker. I am planning to go back at some point next week and get some more views if I can square it with Carolina. Getting access to the ship is almost too good to be true.

The Mary Whalen

I had a great opportunity yesterday. I was invited by Carolina Salguero who had come across some of my Red Hook sketches, to draw her ship the MARY WHALEN. The ship is a retired oil tanker docked in the Red Hook container port, north side of pier 9B. I could draw her for months on end and never be done. I certainly mean to go back while the weather hold out. I managed two drawings yesterday so you will see the other tomorrow. Thanks again to Carolina.

Dude

So many dudes, so little time.

Red Hook

This is a building you can see from the Fairways car park. I'm really curious about this place and fortunately for my a guy called Pete who was working in there came out to see what i was doing and offered to give me a tour next time I'm around. Pete was on his way to deliver a pair of wings he had made from balloons to a Victoria's Secret model shoot. Oh yes, I m very curious about this place. You'll have to forgive this nasty ink color, I mixed it myself from red and green, hoping to get brown and instead got something very unpleasant.

Here is another one just like the other one.

Back To Reality

Enough with the Yankee postings. I mean, what have they done for me lately? This was a quick subway sketch done this week that I was rather happy with. Had the chap not gotten off the train I would have probably overworked it as is usually the case. Less really is more.

Yankee Mania

OK so I'm on a bit of a Yankees roll right now but it does enable me to dust of some things that haven't seen the light of day for a while. I was doing baseball cards for Topps some years ago and my Derek Jeter card made the cover of Becket Baseball card Monthly. They ran a competition inside the magazine to win the original painting, a competition I entered trying to win the painting back(I didn't win). Good times.

World Champs

As we say in England "Result". This is a painting i did for Upper Deck last year that was turned into a poster. The original was 2ft x 3ft, one of my largest painting but a really great job to get. Thanks Yankees and thanks Upper Deck.

Let's Go Yankees

I'm sorry for all you Phillies fans out there but the Yankees will will the World Series tonight. About 20 years back I did this painting of Joe DiMaggio as part of a series for the Bradford Exchange, it round up on a plate and as a limited edition print signed by the great man himself. Here is Joe with the original painting and a better look at the painting reduced to it's plate form. This was a highlight for me, expect another Yankee related image in celebration.

McSorley's Finished

This is the final version of the painting. The challenge was getting to fit the composition into a square format. This painting will be hung at the Society of Illustrators some time in December along with a bunch of other artists work all fitting a 12x12 inch format. I think they all get put up for auction which maybe be an online affair, if that is true I'll let you know. There should be some bargains to be had.
